ABSTRACT

The aim of the present investigation deals with biological evaluation Berberis baluchistanica roots. For this purpose different biological assay of crude methanolic extract (CME) and its fractions that are chloroform fraction, n-hexane fraction, Ethyl acetate fraction, n- butanol fraction and aqueous fraction were carried out. The results from the agar diffusion method indicated that CME showed maximum antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus with the inhibition zone (22 mm). Whereas Ethylacetate fraction showed strong activity against B. subtilis (16mm). On the other hand, CME showed maximum activity against Candida albicans and Microsporum canis with % inhibition of (62%) and (51%) respectively and Chloroform fraction showed good activity against Candida glaberata and Candida albicans with % inhibition of (60%) and (55%) respectively. Furthermore, CME showed maximum insecticidal % mortality against Sitophilus oryzea with (90%) mortality whereas (80%) mortality against both Tribolium castaneum and Rhyzopertha dominica. and also Chloroform fraction also showed maximum activity against Callosbruchus analis with (90%) mortality and (80%) against Rhyzopertha dominica. The extract and fractions were also appreciating for further investigations in future.

Keywords: Antimicrobial, insecticidal, Berberis baluchistanica roots.
