Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTI EPILEPTIC ACTIVITY OF SESAMUM INDICUM LEAVES EXTRACT IN MICE

Naveen Sharma*, Gurdeep Singh, Megha Jain, AK Jain, Ashish Mangal

ABSTRACT

The leaves of Sesamum Indicum used in traditional medicine to treat several pathologies like the pains, fever, bacterial infections and fungal infections. The current study was designed to investigate the phytochemical analysis, acute toxicity study and antiepileptic activity of aqueous and ethanolic extract of Sesamum Indicum leaves. The phytochemical analysis indicated the presence of sterol, terpene, polyphenol, flavonoid, glycoside and alkaloid in the aqueous extract whereas only the polyphenol, alkaloid, sterol, terpen were revealed in the ethanolic extract. The presence of these compounds confirmed several pharmacological activities on the leaves of the plant. In order to indicate its tolerance limits, we determined acute toxicity. Use three different doses of both extracts for investigate of antiepileptic activity of aqueous and ethanolic extract of Sesamum Indicum leaves. Two different models use in this study one was Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) Method and second was Maximum Electric Shock (MES) Method. Phenytoin (25 mg/kg) and diazepam (5 mg/kg) used as standard drug.

Keywords: Sesamum Indicum, antiepileptic activity, acute toxicity study, Pentylenetetrazole (PTZ) Method, Maximum Electric Shock (MES).
