Abstract

“THE GREEN BLOOD” WHEATGRASS JUICE, A HEALTH TONIC HAVING ANTIBACTERIAL POTENTIAL

Jagdeep Singh Pannu, Rajeev Kumar Kapoor*

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study is to explore the benefits of
wheatgrass juice with respect to its antibacterial potential and
phytochemical constituents present in its aqueous extract.
METHODS: Antibacterial activity was measured through agar well
diffusion method and phytochemical analysis with referred chemical
tests. RESULTS: For antibacterial activity Escherichia coli and
Staphylococcus aureus showed sensitivity to wheatgrass juice. The
phytochemical screening of the aqueous extract of wheatgrass showed
the presence of various secondary metabolites but the absence of
sterols and triterpenoids in general. CONCLUSIONS: Results show
that wheatgrass aqueous extract contains compounds reported to have
beneficial effects on human body. It can be a potential source of natural antioxidants and
antimicrobial. There is a lot of clinical evidence to suggest that wheat grass juice is beneficial
in protecting us from diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Once the
investigators know how much and which compounds are present, we can then find out
possible reasons why they are protective.

Keywords: Wheatgrass, Anti-diabetic, Anti-cancer, Phytochemical, Secondary metabolites, Antibacterial.
