In Ayurvedic literature, there is great emphasis on the pharmaceutical process known as Sanskara. This process is designed to enhance the qualities of the drug. Bhasmas are normally administered as metallic & non-metallic minerals & it means an ash obtained through incineration. The various processes of Shodhana(purification) & Maarana (Calcination) & incorporation of herbal juices (Bhawna) make the drug more effective. By using many manufacturing processes, the final product is changed into nano sized particles Bhasma (1-2 u)., which may facilitate the absorption and assimilation of the drug. The physical & chemical Ayurvedic tests confirm the effectiveness & acceptability of the product. Standardization of is very necessary to confirm the identity & to determine its quality, purity & efficacy. Bhasmas enhance bioavailability through digestive system and also activate drug metabolizing enzymes. Because these mineral & metal remedies are very effective, they are administered in very small doses and have instantaneous effect. However the biggest challenge is the lack of complete standardization by physicochemical parameters. So, the main aim of this article is to study the basic concept of Bhasma Kalpana by standardizing and preparing the Tamra Bhasma by classical methods.

Keywords: Bhasma, Sodhana, Maarana, Tamra Bhasma, Standardization.
