Abstract

COMBINED AQUEOUS LEAF EXTRACT OF VERNONIA AMYGDALINA AND MAGNIFERA INDICA MODULATES HEMATOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS IN DIABETIC RATS

ABSTRACT

The antioxidant efficacy of the leaves of Vernonia amygdalina and Magnifera indica were studied to ascertain the combined effects of the extract on some hematological and biochemical indices in alloxan induced diabetic rats. The rats were divided into four groups of three rats each. Group 1 was Normal control, group 2 was not treated i.e. diabetic untreated, and induced groups (3 and 4) which were administered with 300 and 500mg/kg of the extract respectively twice daily for a period of two weeks. There was significant increase (p<0.05) in the level of WBC but RBC and PCV showed no significant difference (p>0.05) in diabetic rats administered with combined Vernonia amygdalina and magnifera indica leave extract compared to the diabetic control groups. Consistent significant increase (p<0.05) was observed in activities of erythrocytes antioxidants of SOD, GSH and CAT while MDA showed significant decrease (p<0.05) in the treated groups. There was a significant decrease (p<0.05) in serum cholesterol and ketone bodies while serum protein show significant decrease with the rats administered 300 and 500mg/kg of the combined extract compare to the untreated diabetic rats. This result indicates that the combined aqueous extract of Vernonia amygdalina and magnifera indica leaves has hypoglycaemic, hypolipidaemic, hypoketonaemic and antioxidant properties.
