Abstract

PREVALENCE OF IRON DEFICIENCY ANEMIA IN A&U TIBBIA COLLEGE AND HOSPITAL KAROL BAGH-AN OBSERVATIONAL CASE STUDY

Shabir Ahmad Bhat*, Aysha Raza, Paras wani and Shahbuddin

ABSTRACT

Iron deficiency is the most common cause of anemia in pregnancy worldwide. It can be mild, moderate or severe. Severe anemia can have very serious consequences for mothers and babies, but there is controversy about whether treating mild or moderate anemia provides more benefit than harm. More than half a million maternal deaths occur each year, approximately 90% of which are in developing countries, making evident a large discrepancy between developed and developing countries. Iron treatment can be given by mouth, intramuscular or intravenous injection. Alternatively, blood transfusions and recombinant erythropoietin are also used. In Unani system of medicine this disease is known as Sooulquinya which is considered as liver disorder, where it is described by various symptoms and can be treated with oral iron therapy only.

Keywords: iron deficiency anemia, Sooulquinya, Unani, Quillatuddam.
