Abstract

DEPRESSION AMONG MOTHERS OF DOWN SYNDROM CHILDREN

Maram Al-Otabi, Dr. Farihan Farouk Helmy*, Dr. Adnan Amin Alsulaimani, Dr. Randa Basiouny

ABSTRACT

Down syndrome (DS), also known as trisomy 21, is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of a third copy of chromosome 21.[1] It is the most common chromosome abnormality in humans,[2] occurring in about one per 1000 babies born each year.[3] Children with Down syndrome have multiple malformations, medical conditions, and cognitive impairment because of the presence of extra genetic material from chromosome 21.[4,5] Moreover they were reported to display more behavioral problems overall and to show significantly more intentional problems than their siblings by all rater groups[6] Recent advances in medical treatment and social inclusion have significantly increased the life expectancy of people with DS. In economically developed countries, the average life span of people who are trisomic for Hsa21 is now greater than 55 years.[7]
