Abstract

“ROLE OF SATWAVAJAY CHIKITSA AND BRAHMI SYRUP IN THE MANAGEMENT OF NAIL BITTING HABIT IN CHILDREN”

ABSTRACT

Background: Children emotional tone may change suddenly when they watch adults and attempt to imitate their behaviours and develop the habit disorders. Habits are acquired automatisms, represented by an altered pattern of muscle contraction with complex characteristics, which proceed unconsciously and in a regular basis. Some habits may have harmful effects on health. Due to increasing incidence and prevalence of nail biting in children, there is a need for effective management. As mentioned in classics Satwavajaya Chikitsa, Medhya drug like Brahmi are effective in Manas Vikar. A clinical trial was undertaken to evaluate efficacy of Satwavajaya Chikitsa and drug Brahmi syrup in Nail biting habit of children. Methods: randomized, single blind, interventional trial was carried out on 40 patients (20 patients in each group) of either sex in between the 5 to 15 years of age at P.G. department of Kaumarbhritya, National Institute of Ayurveda. The duration of treatment was 60 days. Clinical evaluation done by assessment criteria. Results:Result showed highly significant results in Group B (Satwavajaya Chikitsa and Brahmi syrup) regarding subjective parameters which were Number, frequency, Intensity, Interference and Global Impairment. Mean overall result in Group A was 15.55% while in Group B was 62.47% Relief. Which shows that group B has more improvement as compare to group A (Satwavajaya Chikitsa and placebo syrup). Conclusion: It can be concluded that Satwavajaya Chikitsa and Brahmi syrup is highly effective in the management of nail biting. The drug is quite safe and acts as anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, memory enhancing.
