The taste sensation of sweetness is one of the most cherished attributes of food substances. A concern over connection between sugars and diabetes has switched the consumer’s interest towards artificial sweeteners. However due to allegations of adverse effects and high costs of artificial sweeteners, there is a trend to “go herbal”. The aim of the present research work was to study the use of herbal sweetener as replacement for conventional sweeteners in pharmaceutical dosage forms. Plant chosen was liquorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.) which has the sweet principle Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate (MAG). A hot water extraction technique of liquorice was performed to extract the sweetener. MAG was evaluated for acute oral toxicity and rise in blood sugar levels. Pharmaceutical formulations like chewable antacid tablets and cough syrups were then prepared using equivalent amount of herbal sweeteners. Each of these were evaluated as per pharmacopoeial parameters and studied for drug-excipient interaction and rise in blood sugar levels. The results indicated that MAG was nontoxic. The prepared formulations passed all pharmacopoeial tests and also maintained blood sugar levels within acceptable limits. From this study it may be concluded that MAG could be considered as replacement for sucrose in pharmaceutical formulations and thus prove to be a boon for diabetic patients.

Keywords: MAG, herbal sweetener, blood sugar level.
