PREVALENCE OF MICROBIAL INFECTION IN MALE AND FEMALE “COPD†PATIENTS AT OPD OF PRIVATE HOSPITAL, SOUTH INDIA

ABSTRACT
The present investigation aimed to investigate the prevalence and rate of microbial infection in male and female COPD outpatient of private hospital. The 138 stable COPD patient from November 2012 to October 2013 in south Tamilnadu, India. Sputum sample were collected for culture. Among 138, 75 recorded culture positive with 54 % (in 75, 14 Klebsiella (10%), 13 Pseudomonas (9%), 1 Acinetobacter (1%), 3 E.coli(2%), 25 Haemophilus influenza(18%), 2 Staphylococcus aureus(1%), 3 Streptococcus pneumonia (2%), 11 candida species (8 %), 3 Filamentous fungi (2%) and 63 recorded culture negative with 46 % and 8 TB positive with 5 %. Based on the antimicrobial susceptibility test, Gram +ve bacteria sensitive to Aminoglycoside and Cephalosphorin (100%) while Gram-ve sensitive to aminoglycoside (57 %), Cephalosporin II &III (66.7%), quinalones(50 to 66.7 %), Piperacillin (100%). Acinetobacter sensitive only to Tigecycline.
