ABSTRACT

Halophiles are extremophilic organisms that thrive in an environment with high concentration of salt. The sediment samples were obtained from the south eastern marine coast of India for the isolation of halophilic bacteria. Further the isolate VIT SPS 2 was found to be effective against all the test pathogens and was considered to be an effective antimicrobial compound producing bacteria. The isolate was mass multiplied and the compounds chloroacetic acid and hexadecane was found to be responsible for antimicrobial activity which was assessed by gas chromatography mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). The effective culture was identified as Bacillus subtilis after phenotypic and genotypic characterization.
