ABSTRACT

We aimed to investigate factor affecting interest in the field of study from the viewpoint of health students. Method: It was a crosssectional study which had done on 290 subjects those were studied as students in health school, Jondi-Shapour University of medical science. The data collection tool was a questionnaire consisted of two sections. The first section was general information, and the second section contained the subject of study. Data has entered in SPSS software (version 19) and was analyzed using statistical tests such as chi-square and Mann-Witney. Results: The finding has shown that student's interest in the field of study was 5% very high, 12.1% high, 43.2 good, 30% intermediate, 5.3% low, and 5% very low. Almost 70% of participants stated that the most effective factor in increasing interest in the field was awareness gained from teachers, and some (7.5%) expressed the usefulness and effectiveness of field in the personal life. Also, 3.2% mentioned future of a work related to the field, and 11.4% knew other factors (being a new field, continuing studies easier than others fields) as the most important factor in increasing interest in the field. Conclusion: Considering that interest in the field plays an important role in learning, and along with the students' scientific abilities and much efforts can lead success and progress in that field. This issue is essential for health students because if they have no interest in the field, do not acquire the necessary skills and abilities. Since skills, abilities, and knowledge of them are factors affecting health of community, it should be considered health students' interest in their field in educational programs.
