Abstract

TRANSGENERATIONAL EFFECTS OF CITRUS LIMETTA OIL VOLATILES ON POSTEMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT AND REPRODUCTIVE POTENTIAL OF RICE MOTH CORCYRA CEPHALONICA (STAINTON) (LEPIDOPTERA: PYRALIDAE)

Kumari Kiran and P. H. Pathak*

ABSTRACT

Citrus limetta (Family: Rutaceae) oil volatiles was screened against different life stages like larva (postembryonic development) and adult (reproductive potential) of the rice-moth, Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) an important pest of stored commodities during F1, F2 and F3 generation. When larvae of this pest were exposed to volatiles action of 160 μl volume of Citrus oil with eight different experimental regimens, during successive generation a drastic decline (P<0.05 or <0.01) in egg output and their hatchability were observed in emerging breeding pairs from those larvae who were exposed continuously till 30 days during F1, F2 and F3 generation when compared with seven other regimens of treated experimental larvae as well as with control. During 6 hours exposure of fattened males and females to Citrus oil volatiles with 160 μl volume causes considerable reduction in breeding potential of rice – moth, in each generation in a programmed manner when compared with control. A significant Transgenerational effect (P<0.05 or <0.01) in breeding potential of rice - moth were also recorded whose adults were continuously exposed to the volatile action of 160 μl volume of Citrus oil for 6 hours duration during F1, F2 and F3 generation when compared with selected other eight experimental regimens.

Keywords: Corcyra cephalonica, postembryonic development, reproductive potential, vapour action of Citrus limetta oil volatiles, transgenerational effects.
