Abstract

INVITRO ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY AND SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC QUANTIFICATION OF TOTAL PHENOLIC AND FLAVONOID CONTENTS OF MALUS DOMESTICA

ABSTRACT

In this study, the antioxidant activity, total phenolic and flavonoid content of three different extracts from the leaves of Malus domestica. (Rosaceae) were determined using spectrophotometric methods. Antioxidant oxidant was analysed by reducing power assay. The amount of total phenolics were analysed by using Folin-Ciocalteau assay and the amount of total flavonoids were analysed by using aluminium chloride calorimetric assay. Ethanol extract with highest absorbance exhibited high antioxidant activity and containing highest amounts of phenolics and flavonoids. The total phenolic content (TPC) ranged from 157.06 (ethanol extract) to 100.23mg/g (chloroform extract) expressed as gallic acid equivalents. The total (TFC) flavonoid content varied from 121.86 (ethanol extract) to 66.53μm/g (chloroform), expressed as rutin equivalents. The significant relation was confirmed between the values for the total phenolic and flavonoids content and antioxidant activity of leaf extracts. The high contents of phenolic and flavonoid compounds indicated that these compounds contribute to the antioxidant activity. These active constituents alone or in combination may be responsible for the observed antioxidant activity. The findings indicated promising antioxidant activity of crude extracts of leaves needs further exploration for their effective use in both modern and traditional system of medicines. The Malus domestica can be regarded as promising candidates for natural plant sources of antioxidants with high value.
