Abstract

ANTI-BACTERIAL, ANTI-OXIDANT AND CYTOTOXIC POTENTIAL OF AQUEOUS AND ORGANIC EXTRACTS OF LAWSONIA INERMIS

Shazia Mansoor*, Sadaf Mehfooz and Huma Mustafa

ABSTRACT

The scientists have identified number of herbs from different parts of India having medicinal properties. The aim of the study was to examine anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and cytotoxicity in leaf extract of Lawsonia inermis extract (aqueous, cyclohexane, benzene, chloroform, acetone, ethyl acetate, ethanol and methanol). The photochemical qualitative analysis of methanollic extracts revealed the presence of alkaloid, flavonoid, tannins, glycoside, anthraquinones and terpenoids may be responsible for its anti-microbial, anti-oxidant and cytotoxicity in L. inermis extracts. The methanollic extract showed considerable anti-microbial activity by well diffusion and disc diffusion method against bacterial strains B. subtilis, S. epidermis and S. cereviceae, the zone of inhibition was found to be 18 mm in each at the concentration of 40 mg/ml of plant extract. The anti-oxidant activity by different methods was screened and the strongest activity was shown by benzene extract of L. inermis with IC50 value of 58.6 ± 3.17 μg/ml by DPPH method. Whereas, the benzene extract of L. inermis gave IC50 value of 7.5 ± 0 μg/ml by Alkaline DMSO method and the methanol extract gave IC50 value of 10.0 ± 1.61 μg/ml by Nitric oxide method. The chloroform extract of L. inermis gave IC50 value of 141.1 ± 4.92 μg/ml by Deoxyribose method. The extracts of L. inermis were found cytotoxic to cancerous cell lines by MTT cell proliferation assay. The aqueous and methanol extract of L. inermis showed cytotoxicity in Jurkat cell line with IC50 value of 688 ± 5.49 μg/ml and 306 ± 2.23 μg/ml respectively.

Keywords: Lawsonia inermis, MTT assay, A549 cell line and DPPH.
