ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus- commonly known as diabetes, is a disease characterized by high blood sugar level. This high blood sugar level is due to either the body does not produce insulin in normal level or cells do not respond to the insulin produced by the body. According to World Health Organization(WHO), diabetes is currently one of the biggest health concerns that the world is faced with. WHO defines diabetes as “a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces”. According to statistics of IDF(International Diabetes Federation), India has more diabetics than any other countries of the world. As per the current statistics the number of diabetics in the country is ranging about more than 62 million and it is expected by the year of 2030, over 100 million people in India are likely to suffer from diabetes. The current review paper highlights about the various in vivo andin vitro models that are used to evaluate this alarming disease.
