Dr. Kavitha latha M L, Dr. Neelima, Dr. Nagamani, Dr. Praveen Kumar Doddamani*

ABSTRACT

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common cause of hospitalization in patients of chronic kidney diseases undergoing dialysis. UTI is second common cause of mortality and morbidity in patients of acute renal failure (ARF) and chronic renal failure (CRF) on dialysis next to pneumonia. Present study was conducted to know the bacteriological profile of UTI in dialysis patients and the antibiogram that helps in prompt treatment of UTI. urine from patients on dialysis was collected under strict aseptic precaution as per guidelines, direct microscopy, culture, identification of organism done based on standard biochemical tests. Antibiotic sensitivity testing was performed by Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method as per CLSI guidelines; ESBL detection was done as per CLSI guidelines. Out of 120 urine samples from patients on dialysis with ARF & CRF 54(45%) were found to be culture positive. Growth was seen in 40CRF and 14 ARF patients. E.coli was the most common organism isolated followed by Klebsiella spp, Staphylococcus aureus and candida. Among total E.coli, the ESBL E.coli was 43.75% and Klebsiella ESBL accounted for 37.5%.
