Abstract

SPECTRAL, MAGNETIC, BIOCIDAL EVALUATION OF HETEROCYCLIC SCHIFF BASE METAL(II) COMPLEXES DERIVED FROM 4-CHLORO PHENYLENEDIAMINE

P. Maheswaran, E. Akila, M. Usharani, and R. Rajavel*

ABSTRACT

In the present study a novel Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II) and Mn(II) complexes with newly synthesized heterocyclic Schiff base ligands derived from 2- thiophenecarboxaldehyde, 4-choloro orthophenylenediamine, furfuraldehyde and 2, 2′ bipyridyl. The ligand and their transition metal complexes were characterized on the basis of various physico-chemical methods including elemental analysis, molar conductance, infrared, electronic spectra, EPR and magnetic studies. The molar conductance data reveal that the chelates are electrolytes. The IR spectral data suggest the involvement of azomethine nitrogen in co-ordination to the central metal ion. The electronic spectral results indicate that all the complexes have distorted octahedral geometry. The ligands and their metal chelates have been screened for their antibacterial activities and the findings have been reported, explained and compared with known antibiotics. The nucleolytic cleavage activities of the complexes were carried out using gel electrophoresis.
