Chaitra N.*, Abin Joy and Handral M.

ABSTRACT

Vigna vexillata, family Fabaceae, is a legume plant used in ayurvedic system of medicine for joint disorders, arthritis, swellings in joints. Objective: The main aim of the study was to carry out and investigate the Antiparkinson’s activity of ethanolic seed extract of Vigna vexillata in Haloperidol induced catalepsy in rats. Method: The rats were randomly into 5 groups (n=6 each). Group I (Normal control) received vehicle, p.o., Group II (Haloperidol control) received vehicle, p.o., Group III (Standard treated) received L-Dopa (100mg/kg), p.o., Group IV & V received EEVV (150 & 300 mg/kg, p.o.) respectively for 21 days. On 21st day Group II, III &IV received Haloperidol (1 mg/kg), i.p. one hr after the drug administration. All the groups were evaluated for both behavioral and biochemical parameters. Results: The extract produced significant decrease in the cataleptic score followed by significant (P<0.0001) increase in the locomotion and transfer latency time. The decreased level of LPO and increased levels of GSH, CAT, SOD, total protein & dopamine concentration were observed in the groups treated with EEVV which reversed the toxicity of inducing agents. Histopathological studies suggest that the extract possessed the ability to regenerate the neurons. Conclusion: The present study concludes that seed extract of Vigna vexillata possess neuroprotective effect in antiparkinson’s rat model as it contains numerous antioxidant constituents.

Keywords: Vigna vexillata, Antiparkinson, Haloperidol, Catalepsy, L-Dopa.
