ABSTRACT
Ageratum conyzoides L. (Family Asteraceae) is an annual herb with a
long history of traditional medicinal use in the tropical and sub-tropical
region of the world, commonly known as Billy gost weeds. In present
study the ethanolic leaves extract of A. conyzoides have been evaluated
using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry, while the mass
spectra of the compounds found in the extracts were matched with the
National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library. To
determine the bioactive components of ethanolic leaf extracts of A.
conyzoides by GC-MS analysis were carried out. Twenty eight
compounds were identified. Some important compounds are; 9-
octadecanamide (27.24%), Phytol (5.92%), Phenol,4,6-di(1,1-dimethylethyl)2-methyl-
(5.73%), Dibutyl phthalate (4.92%), Cyclopropane,1-methyl,2-octyl-(4.62%), Squalene
(4.37%), á-Amyrin (4.06%) and Stigmasterol (3.08%). Some of the identified compounds
have been reported to possess various biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant,
antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory.
Keywords: Ageratum conyzoides, bioactive components, ethanolic extract.
