Abstract

ASSOCIATION OF MATERNAL BIOCHEMICAL ASSESSMENT AND COMMON PROBLEMS IN THIRD TRIMESTER WITH LOW BIRTH WEIGHT

Khoula Begum*, Muhammad Shah Nawaz and Haroon Ahmad

ABSTRACT

The birth weight of infant in turn is a powerful predicator of infant health and success in later life with respect to their cognitive, mental and physical development (Muthaya, 2009). The occurrence of low birth weight (LBW) is 36% and 30% in Bangladesh and India and 19% in Pakistan (UNDP, 2006). Birth weight of infants greatly depends upon good maternal nutrition during the critical period of pregnancy. According to World Health Organization (WHO, 1997) about 200 million women in developing countries become pregnant each year is affected by low weight gain in early, middle and late pregnancy. Particularly, two-fold increases in the risk of prematurity occur with low maternal weight gain and caloric intake in the third trimester (Siega-Riz et al., 1996 and Ortega et al., 2001). Moreover, the mean difference in birth weight of babies in developing countries is due to maternal malnutrition and low supplementation during third trimester (Briend, 1985). Maternal nutritional status as evaluated by pre-pregnancy weight, height, weight gain during gestation has also been repeatedly found to be associated with birth weight (Kramer, 1987). One another study reported that body mass index of mothers affect male fetus more as compared to female fetus. However, gestational hypertension affects female fetus more than male and is a leading cause of maternal and fetal death worldwide (Xiong et al. 1990).
