Abstract

TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PLANNED TEACHING PROGRAM ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING SELF-INJURIOUS BEHAVIOUR (SIB) AMONG CARE TAKERS OF MENTALLY ILL PATIENTS ADMITTED IN SELECTED PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITALS OF SANGLI DISTRICT MAHARASHTRA (INDIA).

ABSTRACT

Background Self-injurious behaviour is reported among patients with wide range of psychiatric disorders notable being all types of psychosis, schizophrenia, Affecting disorders, Substance dependence, Mental retardation, Obsessive compulsive disorder, Dissociative disorder and factious disorder. Objectives: To assess the existing knowledge regarding self-injurious behaviour among care takers of mentally ill patients. To evaluate the effectiveness of planned teaching program on knowledge regarding self-injurious behaviour among care takers of mentally ill patients. Material and methods: Purposive sampling was used Samples were 60 care takers of mentally ill patients from SAIYEESHWARI mental hospital, Miraj Maharashtra (INDIA). Results overall knowledge scores obtained by care takers about self-injurious behaviour in mentally ill patients in pre-test 30% had poor knowledge and 70% had average knowledge score at the end not a single care taker had a good knowledge score. Where as in post test all 60 care takers had good knowledge score which indicates the planned teaching was effective in improving the knowledge of care takers regarding self-injurious behaviour in mentally ill patients. Data related to effect of Planned teaching on knowledge score was 8.39 & post-test mean score 18.07, paired t = - 22.897 P value is ˂ 0.0 (Value = 0.000) difference in average score is statically significant. Conclusion The care takers did not have adequate knowledge and needed to improve the knowledge. The present study tries to find out existing knowledge among care takers regarding self-injurious behaviour and provided knowledge among them regarding self injurious behaviour in mentally ill patients.
