Abstract

INVESTIGATION OF ANTICANCER PROPERTY OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT FRACTIONS OF CALAMUS TENUIS ROXB. EDIBLE SHOOT

ABSTRACT

Objective: To assesses anticancer potential of methanolic extract fractions of Calamus tenuis Roxb. shoots and its qualitative phytoconstituents screening. Method: Fractionation of methanolic crude extract was done by Column Chromatography. Fractions were assessed for cytotoxicity against human lung carcinoma (A549), breast carcinoma (MCF7) and lung normal (L132) cell lines by MTT cell viability assay and qualitative biochemical procedures were followed to assess the key phytoconstituents. Results: Fractions of methanolic extract showed higher toxicity to normal cells than both carcinoma cells. All the screened fractions constituted saponins, flavonoids, steroids, tannins and glycosides, which are assumed to result in significant cytotoxicity. Conclusion: In the present study, methanolic extract fractions obtained from Calamus tenuis Roxb. dry shoots, did not show any promising anticancer potential against human lung (A549) and breast (MCF7) carcinoma cells; due its relatively higher cytotoxicity exhibited against human normal (L132) cells.
