ABSTRACT

The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy and potentiality of a Anti-diabetic drug therapy among the drugs with Type 2 diabetes mellitus population. A Hospital based Prospective, observational and comparative study was carried out for a period of 10 months in a 700 bedded multispecialty hospital. Based on the Inclusion & Exclusion criteria eligible 250 patients 133 (53.2%) males and 117 (46.8%) females were selected for study according to their regular visit, adherence to medication chart, diet control and life style modifications. We selected glipizide, pioglitazone, and metformin as montherapy and combination of pioglitazone metformin and glibenclamide as well as insulin +OHA as combination therapy. Analysis of fasting blood sugar, post prandial sugar and Glycosylated Hemoglobin in Type 2 Diabetes were conducted to find out the glycemic status during treatment, finally to determine the best treatment regimen for Diabetic population. The results of the study demonstrated the efficacy of different classes of drugs in the management of diabetes. Analysis of blood samples revealed that Glipizide shows significant reduction is PPS when compared to others. LDL Findings showed that combination therapy works better in the reduction of LDL. HbA1C Order of reduction was in the following series combination Drugs > Glipizide > Metformin > Pioglitazone. We could not find much change in BMI value due to Anti diabetic treatment. Based on the findings the choice of Monotherapy or combination therapy seems to depend on other cofactors influencing DM.

Keywords: Diabetes, Monotherapy, glipizide, LDL, PPS, cofactors.
