ABSTRACT

Afromosia laxiflora Benth is a medicinal plant that has been used for the treatment of various ailments of human and animals over the time. It has been found to be useful in the treatment of pain, diarrhoea, dysentery, gout and also as antidepressant and anticonvulsant. In this study, methanolic extract of the root bark of this plant was administered orally to 3 groups of rats containing 6 rats in each group at 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg body weight respectively while the control group was administered with distilled water orally. The administrations were done for 21 days and blood was thereafter obtained from the anaesthetized rats through cardiac puncture. The results of the blood and serum analyses showed a decrease in red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration and an increase in total white blood cell and lymphocytes. The total protein slightly decreased but alanine aminotransferase and aspartate aminotransferase significantly (p<0.05) increased. Some pathological changes were also observed in the liver, kidney and the lungs. It was therefore suggested that the extract could be toxic to the liver as the aminotransferases significantly increased and increase in white blood cell could possibly help the immunity of the rats.

Keywords: Afromosia laxiflora, root, extract, rats, blood, serum.
