Abstract

A REVIEW STUDY ON THE CONCEPT OF MANOVAHA SROTAS IN AYURVEDA AND ITS CLINICAL IMPORTANCE

ABSTRACT

According to Ayurveda human body contains numerous channels through which the Dosha, Dhatu, Mala circulate known as Srotas. The “Srotas” are the pathways to carry the nutrient products or waste products of metabolism, to their respective destinations and considered having different shapes Vrtta (round), Dirgha (elongated), Sthula (Gross),and Anu (Minute); may be numerable or innumerable.. Manas (mind) is eternal and it has specific channels through which it keeps contact with the senses situated at different places. For such factors like mind, which are beyond sensory perception (trans-sensory), the entire bodyworks as the Srotas (channel).Acharya Charak has mentioned that the channels of the whole body transport Tridosha; similarly Manas is transported through same channels to provide Chetana to all the living cells of the body. Manovaha Srotas are scattered all over the body and with the consideration of all physical functions related Manas. After careful screening of references related Manas, it is easy to figure out ManoVaha Srotas and it has been given direct references for Manovaha srotas. Acharya Charaka has used the term Manovaha Srotas in Unmada (insanity), Chikitsa because of the causative factors,(Mano Abhighataka) the Vatadi Dosha get vitiated, when the person having small proportion of Satva Guna and affects brain and Hirdaya, the seat of intellect. These causative factors badly affect the mind, carrying channels and derange the mind of the person quickly. So there is demand of society to be aware of the detail knowledge Manovaha Srotas in scientific way to understand the pathophysiology of the the Manas Vyadhi(mental disorders) while treating them.
