ABSTRACT
Mahadadimadi Ghrita, a poly herbal Ayurvedic formulation is
mentioned in the context of Prameha Chikitsa by Chakrapani in his
work Chakradatta. There has been an increase in demand for the
Phyto-pharmaceutical products of Ayurveda. The present study deals
with pharmacognostical identification of ingredients of Mahadadimadi
Ghrita and Physico-Chemical analysis of final product.
Pharmacgnostical study containing both macroscopic and powder
microscopy of raw drugs revealed the identity, quality and purity of all
the constituents of Mahadadimadi Ghrita. Pharmacognostical and
phyto-chemical observations revealed the specific characters of all
active constituents used in the preparation. The presence of oil
globules, starch with prismatic crystals, cork cells were the characteristic features observed in
the microscopy of drug combination. Refractive index of Mahadadimadi Ghrita was 1.4700, specific gravity 0.9181, iodine value 32.5421, saponification value 243.4538 and acid value is 1.5439.
Keywords: Mahadadimadi Ghrita, Pharmacognosy, Physico-chemical analysis, HPTLC.
