Abstract

SYNTHESIS, CHARACTERIZATION AND ANTIMICROBIAL STUDY OF SOME TRANSITION METAL COMPLEXES OF BIDENTATE CHALCONE LIGAND

ABSTRACT

Transition metal complexes containing bidentate O,O donar ligand, 4-
hydroxy-3-[3-(3,4,5-trimethoxy phenyl)-acryloyl]-6-methyl-2H-pyran-
2-one derived from 3-acetyl-6-methyl-pyran-2,4(3H)-dione
(dehydroacetic acid) and 3,4,5-trimethoxy benzaldehyde, have been
synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, thermal analysis,
magnetic succeptibility, UV-visible, IR, 1H-NMR, Mass spectroscopy.
X-ray diffraction analysis & antimicrobial activity. Analytical &
spectral data, the stoichiometry of the complexes was found to be 1:2
(metal: ligand). The physic-chemical data suggest a distorted
octahedral geometry for the Cu (II) complexes and an octahedral
geometry for all the other complexes. The synthesized ligand and its metal complexes were
screened for their in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity against several human
pathogenic bacteria and fungi. It has been found that some of the complexes were active &
show higher activity than the free ligand. Metal chelation affects significantly bioactive
behaviour of the organic ligands.
