Abstract

ANALGESIC ACTIVITY AND PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING OF ETHANOLIC EXTRACT OF MUSA SAPIENTUM ON INFLAMMATION INDUCED RATS

*C. Sumathy, Dr. S. Natarajan

ABSTRACT

Ethanolic extract of unripe Musa sapientum (EEMS) was subjected to phytochemical, Pharmacognostical and analgesic studies. The analgesic activity of EEMS was evaluated using hot plate, tail flick and acetic acid induced tests at doses of 100, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg bw. The hot plate methods and tail flick methods are suitable for evaluating centrally acting analgesics. Acetic acid induced writhing is rapid and reliable model to evaluate peripheral type of analgesic action of drugs. In the present study ethanolic extract of unripe Musa sapientum showed significant dose dependent analgesic activity. Phytochemical screening of EEMS showed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, saponins, steroid, phenolic, compounds, tannins and proteins. In Pharmacognostical studies acid insoluble ash was more when compared to water soluble ash. Extractive values were more for ethanol than other extracts. Dry matter was 61%, moisture content was 17.83, crude fiber content was 84.56, foaming index was 292.15 and swelling index was 0.241%. The analgesic activity might be due to the presence of extractive bioactive compounds in Musa sapientum.

Keywords: Musa sapientum, analgesic, Pharmacognosy, phytochemical analysis
