Abstract

RANGE OF METABOLIC FLEXIBILITY FOR ANTIOXIDANT POTENTIAL OF TEN WILD AND ORNAMENTAL ASTERACEAEN PLANTS OF MEERUT

ABSTRACT

Asteraceae family is one of the largest families of Angiosperms. Drugs from the plants are easily available, less expensive, safe and efficient and rarely have side effects and traditional medicines made from plants are the only available and affordable source for treating various ailments. The present investigation is aimed at exploring the phytochemical constituents for antioxidant potential of some locally available members of Asteraceae family. The selected plants are Ageratum conyzoides L., Eclipta alba L., Parthenium hysterophorus L., Tridax procumbens L., Vernonia cinerea L., Calendula officinalis L., Chrysanthemum indicum L., Dahlia sp. Cav., Helianthus annuus L. and Tagetes erecta L. Out of the antioxidant compounds studied Phenolic content, Quercetin and Ascorbate were found to be highest in inflorescence of Tagetes, mature leaves of Chrysanthemum, young leaves of Tagetes, respectively. Out of the antioxidant enzymes studied the activity of Peroxidase was highest in mature leaves of Ageratum and Catalase in root of Tridax.
