Abstract

MODIFIED HIGH DIETARY PROTEIN MAY AMELIORATES ARSENIC INDUCED HEPATOTOXICITY IN ALBINO RAT MODEL

Shyamal Kanti Das, *Chandan Roy and Sumana Mondal

ABSTRACT

Arsenic was given orally to rats as arsenic trioxide, 3mg/kg body wt. day in a single dose for 28 consecutive days. Male Wister rats of 120gm – 140gn were selected for our experiment. The effect of arsenic administration produced increase in the liver weight. It also produced an increase in SGOT (AST), SGPT (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity and blood glucose level whereas treatment with modified high dietary protein may ameliorates the effect of arsenic on hepatotoxicity in case of adult albino rat model. On the other hand treatment with arsenic trioxide significantly decreased the serum cholesterol level whereas modified high dietary protein significantly increased it in arsenic treated modified high dietary protein treated group. In our histological observation treatment with arsenic trioxide produced hepatocellular damage or necrotic hepatocytes and fibrosis. But, arsenic with modified high dietary protein produced mild necrosis in liver and looks like approximately normal liver histological structures. Rats, treated with only modified high protein diet, showed the normal central vein, normal hepatocytes and normal sinusoids respectively.

Keywords: Arsenic trioxide, hepatotoxicity, modified high dietary protein, necrotic hepatocytes, fibrosis, sinusoids.
