Abstract

GENETIC BASIS OF THE NEUROINFLAMMATORY DISEASE- MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

Silpa Vijayan*, Reshma B. V. and Anusree S.

Abstract

MS is a chronic neuroinflammatory disease of the central nervous system characterized by neurodegeneration, demyelination, and astroglial proliferation, affecting both white and gray matter of neuronal cells. The human leukocyte antigen region is the strongest susceptibility locus linked to MS. There exists other non-human leukocyte antigen loci associated with the disease. To study the whole heritability of the disease, high-throughput genotyping, sequencing, and gene-expression studies have been performed, and revealed more information. In this review, An overview of the genomic as well as microRNA-expression studies, in order to elucidate the causes or pathology and genetic events of the disease. Genetic basis of MS is a promising field that is going to be very productive in the next decade to understand all the factors contributing to the development of MS.

Keywords: Multiple sclerosis, genetics, gene expression, Human leukocyte antigen (HLA).
