A REVIEW ON ENDOSCOPIC MANAGEMENT OF MALLORY WEISS TEAR

. Abstract Mallory - Weiss tear is a injury or tear occur in the junction of esophagus and stomach which affects it’s mucosal layer. This results due to forceful and prolonged vomiting, coughing or may due to convulsions or alcohol ingestion. It produce lacerations in the mucous membrane which lead to hematemesis and blood in stools. Mallory - Weiss tear is sometimes an acute condition which can be managed within 10 days and it is a rarely fatal condition. The bleeding is from an arterial blood vessel in the upper gastrointestinal tract due to the mucosal tear. Nearly 10% of tear appears in esophagus and most of the remaining occur at the junction of esophagus and stomach or below or in the stomach. This bleeding disrupts fluid and electrolyte balance of the body. Endoscopic treatments are used for bleeding in the Mallory Weiss tear which are endoscopic electrocoagulation, band ligation, endoscopic hemoclip placement, contact thermal treatment and argon plasma coagulation.
