Abstract

Type 2 diabetes mellitus and hypertension frequently coexist. Hypertensive diabetic patients are at higher risk of cardiovascular events which necessitates strict blood pressure control as recommended by many local and international guidelines. The main objective of the current study was to evaluate the therapeutic management of hypertension in diabetic patients in Soba University Hospital in accordance to the National guidelines. The study was retrospective cross sectional hospital-based study, data were retrospectively collected from patients’ records using a pre-designed data collection sheet. Data were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). A total of 125 hypertensive diabetic patients were enrolled, the prescribing pattern for antihypertensive medications was according to the National guidelines for managing systemic hypertension in 62.4% of the study population reviewed. A Combination therapy of antihypertensive medications was the most predominant among the participants being prescribed for 30% of them, while Oral Anti-diabetic Drugs (OADs) were the most anti-diabetics prescribed for 44% of the patients under study. Stroke and diabetic nephropathy were the most common observed complications being distributed at rate of 10.4%and 13.6% respectively, also they represented 9.6%and 5.6% respectively as combined complication among the study population. 57.6% were treated according to the local guidelines, and 42.4% were not. This low level of compliance with guidelines might be the reason behind the observed complications.
