Abstract

KRIYA KALP FOR HEALTHY EYE SIGHT: AN AYURVEDIC PROCEDURE

Abstract

Sense of the vision is one of the choicest possessions of living beings. In Ayurveda, sense of vision is the most important part of the body. It says: If a person is endowed with all other sensory faculties, strength, beautiful appearance etc. but without eye sight, he will be as useless as an insect. This take place in three stages: 1. Stage of ''Indriya - Artha - Sannikasa'' - contact between eye and objects. 2. Stage of ''Roopa-Alocanam'' - Analysis of Images. 3. Stage of ''Chakshu Buddhi'' - visual perception According to National Eye Institute, Refractive error are the most common cause of vision problems. Too much screen time, low intake of water, lack of sleep, rubbing eyes too often, shipping our or eye examination, smoking etc. not protecting eyes from sunlight, working for prolonged period in dim or in bright light. The best way to improve your poor eyesight and present worsening vision is to get regular eye examination at least every two years. In Ayurveda some of the procedure are highly beneficial and are included under kriyakalp. There are five major types of Kriya Kalpa: 1) Tarpana 2) Putapaka 3) Seka 4) Aschyotana 5) Anjana Tarpana - is a procedure of pouring medicated ghee or other substances upon the eyes. Putpaka - is similar to tarpana, but the ingredients, preparation of medicine and duration are different. Seka is the procedure of pouring the liquid medicine very slowly to open eye from a height of four angula. Aschyotama is the instillation of few drops of medicine to the open eye from a height of two angula. Anjana is applying medicinal pastes or powders to the inner side of lower lid. Some eye exercises, Pranayama, Neti and Trataka are also beneficial. Ayurvedic procedure ''kriyakalpa'' and perceptions regarding maintaining healthy and good eye sight are explored in this article. The aim of this review is to spread the awareness by this ayurvedic procedure provided both subjective and objective relief to the eye patients.
