Abstract

Ion exchange chromatography (IEC) is a type of liquid chromatography that separates molecules based on their ionic charge. The stationary phase in IEC is a resin that has charged functional groups covalently attached to it. The mobile phase is a buffered solution that contains ions of the same charge as the functional groups on the resin. When a sample containing ionic molecules is applied to the column, the molecules will bind to the resin with the opposite charge. The strength of the binding depends on the ionic strength and pH of the mobile phase. As the mobile phase flows through the column, the molecules will elute in order of their ionic charge, with the most weakly bound molecules eluting first.
