AGNI AND THE GUT MICROBIOME: EXPLORING FUNCTIONAL CONVERGENCES BETWEEN AYURVEDIC DIGESTIVE PHYSIOLOGY AND CONTEMPORARY MICROBIOME SCIENCE

Abstract Ayurveda describes Agni, the digestive fire, as the central determinant of nutrition, immunity, and longevity, while contemporary biomedicine has identified the gut microbiome as a comparably central regulator of host metabolism, barrier integrity, and systemic immunity. Both frameworks converge on the premise that the process occurring within the gastrointestinal lumen, whether conceived as enzymaticthermal transformation or microbial fermentation, determines whether the body receives nourishment or toxic burden. Evaluating Agni-based physiology as described in the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya alongside modern gut microbial ecology reveals significant functional parallels and distinct conceptual limits. We describe the classical typology of Agni (Sama, Vishama, Tikshna, Manda) alongside the modern concepts of eubiosis and dysbiosis, noting that both systems recognize a spectrum of digestive or microbial function ranging from balanced to dysregulated states with characteristic clinical consequences. We examine the Ayurvedic concept of Ama, the toxic residue of incomplete digestion, alongside modern descriptions of dysbiosis-associated intestinal permeability and metabolic endotoxemia, while avoiding claims of direct biochemical equivalence between these constructs. Points of convergence include an emphasis on individual constitutional variation, the centrality of diet and meal timing, and the recognition that digestive dysfunction propagates to distal organ systems and systemic inflammation. We conclude that Ayurvedic digestive physiology and gut microbiome science, despite arising from distinct epistemological traditions, describe functionally analogous physiological terrain and merit collaborative, hypothesis-driven investigation rather than superficial terminological mapping.
