A CLINICAL STUDY TO EVALUATE THE EFFICACY OF VIMALA VARTI ANJANA IN THE MANAGEMENT OF KACHA WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO IMMATURE SENILE CATARACT

Abstract

Cataract is one of the leading causes of visual impairment and blindness worldwide, accounting for a significant proportion of avoidable blindness among the elderly population. Although cataract surgery remains the standard treatment, the growing prevalence of age-related cataract, economic constraints, limited access to surgical facilities and the absence of effective pharmacological interventions have prompted interest in alternative and supportive therapeutic approaches. Ayurveda describes a condition known as Kacha under the spectrum of Drishtigata Rogas. Kacha is considered an advanced stage of Timira and a precursor of Linganasha, characterized by progressive deterioration of vision. The clinical manifestations of Kacha, including Avyakta Darshana, Dwividha Darshana, Vihwala Darshana and Netrayasa, closely resemble the symptomatology of immature senile cataract. The present review explores the Ayurvedic concept of Kacha and critically evaluates the therapeutic potential of Vimala Varti Anjana in its management. Relevant information was collected from classical Ayurvedic texts such as Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya and Sahasrayoga, along with contemporary ophthalmological literature and published scientific studies. The ingredients of Vimala Varti Anjana, namely Yashtimadhu, Maricha, Pippali, Lodhra, Devadaru, Haridra, Haritaki, Vibhitaki and Amalaki, possess Chakshushya, Rasayana, Lekhana, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These attributes may help in preserving ocular tissue integrity, reducing oxidative stress and delaying degenerative changes associated with cataractogenesis. Anjana Karma has been emphasized in Ayurvedic ophthalmology as an important local therapeutic procedure for maintaining ocular health and managing visual disorders. The collective pharmacological profile of Vimala Varti Anjana suggests its potential utility in early-stage cataract and Kacha. However, further experimental and clinical investigations are necessary to establish its efficacy and mechanism of action through scientific validation.
