SHADBHAVA: AN AYURVEDIC DEVELOPMENTAL BLUEPRINT FOR BIOLOGICAL INHERITANCE AND PERSONALIZED HEALTHCARE- A CRITICAL REVIEW
*Dr. Naveenta Devi, Dr. Nisha Jaglan
Abstract Shadbhava is a fundamental Ayurvedic doctrine that explains the multidimensional factors responsible for the formation, development, and individuality of human life. Classical Ayurvedic texts describe six determinants—Matrija Bhava, Pitrija Bhava, Atmaja Bhava, Satmyaja Bhava, Rasaja Bhava, and Sattvaja Bhava—as essential contributors to embryogenesis and the manifestation of physical, physiological, psychological, and behavioral characteristics. Unlike reductionist models of inheritance that predominantly emphasize genetic transmission, Shadbhava presents a holistic developmental framework integrating hereditary, nutritional, environmental, psychological, and spiritual dimensions of health. The present review critically examines the concept of Shadbhava through textual analysis of major Ayurvedic classics and explores its relevance in the context of contemporary biological sciences. Each component of Shadbhava is analyzed in relation to modern concepts such as genetic inheritance, maternal-fetal interactions, developmental programming, environmental adaptation, nutritional epigenetics, and psychobiological determinants of health. The review further evaluates the potential of Shadbhava as a conceptual basis for personalized healthcare by highlighting its alignment with predictive, preventive, and individualized medical approaches. The analysis suggests that Shadbhava offers a comprehensive developmental paradigm that extends beyond conventional genetic explanations and recognizes the dynamic interplay between hereditary factors and environmental influences throughout life. Although direct scientific validation of several components remains limited, emerging evidence from epigenetics, developmental biology, and precision medicine provides new opportunities for interdisciplinary exploration. Revisiting Shadbhava through contemporary scientific perspectives may contribute to a deeper understanding of human development and support the development of integrative models for personalized healthcare. Thus, Shadbhava remains a clinically and philosophically relevant concept with significant implications for future Ayurvedic research and evidence-based healthcare innovation.
