FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF A POLYHERBAL EMULSION CONTAINING LINUM USITATISSIMUM, ALOE BARBADENSIS & ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS FOR TOPICAL APPLICATION

Abstract

The present study was aimed at developing and evaluating a polyherbal emulsion containing Linum usitatissimum (flaxseed), Aloe barbadensis (Aloe vera), and Rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) for topical application. These herbal ingredients were selected because of their reported moisturizing, soothing, antioxidant, and protective properties. Flaxseed gel and Aloe vera gel were incorporated into the aqueous phase, while rosemary oil was used as the herbal oil component. The polyherbal emulsion was prepared using suitable emulsifying and stabilizing agents and evaluated for its physical and physicochemical properties. The prepared formulation was assessed for appearance, colour, odour, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spread ability, washability, emulsion type, phase separation, centrifugation stability, and skin irritation. Stability of the formulation was also evaluated under different storage conditions. The developed formulation showed good physical appearance, uniformity, and acceptable consistency, with no visible phase separation during the stability study. The formulation was found to be suitable for topical application based on the evaluated parameters. The combined use of flaxseed, Aloe vera, and rosemary provides a simple herbal approach for the development of a topical polyherbal emulsion. Further studies are required to establish its biological activity and therapeutic potential.
