Abstract

A parachute is a device, typically a large fabric canopy, designed to slow the descent of people or objects through the atmosphere by increasing air resistance, used for safety in skydiving, military drops, cargo delivery, and spacecraft recovery, functioning by catching the air like a sail to ensure a slow, safe landing. Paragliding uses a foot-launched, fabric wing (like a modern, steerable parachute) for unpowered flight, differing from parachuting which is for descent after jumping from an aircraft; pilots sit in a harness, controlling direction and speed with lines, launching from hills or flat ground via towing, and can soar for hours, sometimes using reserve parachutes for emergencies.

Keywords: Parachute, paraglide, free-fall, free-glide, open air, canopy.
