Ankita Shree*, Rupsa Seth, Shrikirti Das and Papiya Mitra Mazumdar
Abstract Rheumatoid arthritis is systematic inflammatory auto immune disorder of unknown etiology which affects multiple joints and cause cartilage erosion. Bauhinia acuminata also known as dwarf white orchid are used extensively in folklore medicine to treat pain, skin ailments, cancer, diabetes, throat infections and asthma. As there were no scientific reports on the use of Bauhinia acuminata for anti-arthritic activity, the present study was designed to evaluate the effects of methanolic extracts in Freund’s complete adjuvant (FCA) induced arthritis in animals. Anti-arthritic parameters are measured by arthritic score, joint diameter, gait analysis, spleen weight and paw volume. The dose of Bauhinia acuminata was selected by stair case method (up and down method) it was administered at 400mg/kg and 600mg/kg orally and diclofenac (5mg/kg) was used as standard. Arthritic score was estimated by noting the reduction in redness, swelling and erythema. Both the doses showed significant improvement in arthritic score (p Keywords: Bauhinia acuminata, Rheumatoid arthritis, Gait analysis. Arthritic score, plethysmometer.
