ANALYSIS OF PHYSICOCHEMICAL PROPERTIES AND ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY OF SOME TRADITIONAL INDIAN AYURVEDIC BHASMAS
Sitansu Kumar Verma and Soni Yadav*
Abstract Traditional Medicine, ayurvedic ‘Bhasma’ formulations have beenused for treatment for thousands of years all over the world and widelyin India. These are currently being manufactured at modern plantsusing modern technologies and instrumentations. They arecommercially available with modern packaging systems as well. Thearea of traditional medicines yet to be developed and rationalized invarious respects like clear qualitative and quantitative informationabout the medicinally active principles (inorganic/organic compoundsor conjugates etc.), pharmocodynamics, pharmacokinetics and clearpicture about mechanism(s) of action of the active principle(s) atmolecular level which involves relevant understanding of theirpossible involvement in intra/extracellular signaling mechanisms. Use of sophisticated, cutting edge analytical techniques is the need of the hour for the study and analysis oftraditional medicines. To understand the mechanism of action, the basic requirement is toknow various physicochemical properties of a given formulation. Our work is to address thisrequirement and some studies were designed. Novel approaches of antimicrobial studies werealso designed for the medicine samples. In the experiments we have used commerciallyavailable ayurvedic (SHREE Baidyanath Ayurved, Gwalior, MP, India and Divya Pharmacy,Haridwar, Uttarakhand, India) were analyzed for various physico-chemical parameters. Forexperimental purpose, Flame Photometer (Model No 128, Systronics, India), FTIR (8201 PC,Shimadzu, Japan) were used. The application software used for FTIR analysis has beenPerkin Elmer Spectrum Version 10.03.06). For the study of possible antimicrobial activity,Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli were used. The interesting findings will help in rational development of traditional medicines. Keywords: Escherichia coli were used.
