Abstract Intra uterine growth restriction (IUGR) refers to a condition in which a foetus is unable to achieve its genetically determined potential size. This functional definition seeks to identify a population of foetuses at risk for modifiable but otherwise poor outcomes. The incidence of upvishtaka (IUGR) in India 16%. IUGR is an important cause of foetal morbidity and mortality. In IUGR development and maturation of foetus delayed or impaired. Usually IUGR (intrauterine growth retardation) and small for gestational age (SGA) are used interchangeably. There are minute differences between them. SGA defined as birth weight less than two standard deviations below the mean or less than the 10th percentile of a standard birth weight. Placental insufficiency or utero placental insufficiency is most important cause of intrauterine growth restriction. IUGR patient suffer many problems like perinatal asphyxia, hypothermia, hypoglycaemia, and polycythaemia.
