Abstract

Background - Whole world is seeking the help of Ayurveda for clues to find newer ways and remedies to control Diabetes and its complications. Introduction – Meha / Prameha, mentioned in classical ancient Ayurveda texts is having some similarities with Diabetes mellitus of a modern era & both of them have symptomatic resemblance. Though modern view of pathogenesis of Diabetes is somewhat unclear, increased oxidative stress is considered as a prime cause of Diabetes. Aim, Objective - Dhatri [Amalaki – Indian gooseberry / Emblica officinalis] & Nisha [Haridra - Turmeric / Curcuma longa] are Agrya [best medicines] for treating Prameha & related complications & can be effective in managing Diabetes mellitus likewise. Material-Method – Classical textual reference "Meheshu Dhatri-Nishe" of Ashtang Hridayam clearly states importance of Amalaki & Haridra. Both also contain various principles responsible for its antioxidant & free radical scavenging property. Discussion - Amalaki fruit & Haridra rhizome helps in treating Prameha & it's complications by decreasing kleda i.e. kledaghna action & by rejuvenating i.e. Rasayana property. Also, antioxidant principles help to relieve oxidative stress. Conclusion - This simple, cost-effective, household & easily available medicinal combination is advisable, as it is having precious therapeutic values & is devoid of any side effects.
