PHARMACOGNOSTICAL AND PRELIMINARY PHYSICOCHEMICAL EVALUATION OF RASNA GUGGULU

Abstract

Rasna Guggulu is a preparation mentioned for management of Gridhrasi by Chakradutta and has Rasna, Guggulu and Ghrita as its ingredients. It is having Ushna Virya, Vata hara as well as Vata Kapha samana properties so as to encounter the disease condition. Gridhrasi is a disease where shoola (pain) is a major symptom and which comes under vatavyadhi spectrum. A pharmacognostical study involving the microscopy of powdered Rasna Guggulu and a physicochemical analysis of the same were carried out to evaluate the quality of the formulation and to develop its profile. On pharmacognostical study, multicellular trichome, simple fibres, fragments of epidermal cells with stomata of Rasna leafs were identified. Also the oil globules of ghee was also identified. Analytical study showed 7 spots at 254 nm and 6 spots at 366 nm. The pH of the formulation was found to be at 6.5. The parameters presented in this paper may serve as standard reference for the quality control analysis of Rasna guggulu.
