SYNTHESIS OF 2’6’-DICYANO ANILINO – STEROIDS

Abstract

A new method for the introduction of a benzenoid system in the rings of steroidal ketones having active methylene groups via the corresponding hydroxymethylene ketones and enamino ketones has been developed. Formylation of different types of steroidal ketones having active methylene groups with ethyl formate followed by enamine reaction with pyrrolidine produces enamino – ketones which on reaction with six fold excess of malononitrile in boiling benzene in the presence of ammonium acetate in acetic acid with continuous separation of water gives the dicyano anilino steroids in good yields. The reaction may be extended to other steroidal ketones to give the respective dicyano-anilino steroids.
