CONCEPT OF MAJJA DHATU AND ITS SIGNIFINCANCE

Abstract Ayurveda postulates the unique principals of Tridosha, Dhatu and Mala for homeostasis of the body. Dosha, Dhatu, and malas are is piller of the body because they form an integral part of the body for basic nutrition and maintenance of structural factors of the same. During formation of Asthi Dhatu, Vata creates spaces in bones. These spaces are filled with nourishing tissues of Medas or fat which is known as Majja or Bone marrow. The sixth dhatu nourished after asthi dhatu is majja dhatu. Majja dhatu is formed as poshak Asthi dhatu flows through the majja vaha srotas in to the majja dhara kala and is digested by the majjaagni. Majja Dhatu nourishes body, strengthens body, fills bones and nourishes Shukra Dhatu. majja dhatu is unctuous, fatty tissue located in asthi, hence it is called asthi Sneha. The skull is casing of brain. The vertebrae are the casing of spinal cord. While the brain and spinal cord make up the central nervous system, the majja dhatu is associated with the entire nervous system.
