Abstract

Alcohol is a substance that is easily accessible across the society and lacks control over sales and consumption. Awareness about the effects is very important and should be encouraged. This study was carried out to ascertain the level of awareness of effects of alcohol consumption amongst tertiary education students in Port Harcourt. This was a cross-sectional study conducted and 121 students participated with ages 35 years. The study revealed that awareness created were done by: school-52.5%, family-30.5%, peers-17% with a no response of 3. The study also shows that 77% of the students have consumed alcohol for less than 5 years and 23% have consumed alcohol for greater than 5 years. This increase in alcohol consumption for less than 5 years was due to lack of awareness by family at home before gaining admission into tertiary institution and the decreased in the percentage of students taking alcohol for than 5 years was due to the awareness created by school management as students were admitted.
