PHYTOCHEMICAL SCREENING AND ANTIBACTERIAL ACTIVITY OF GUAZUMA ULMIFOLIA

Abstract

The preliminary phytochemical analysis of ethanolic extract of Guazuma ulmifolia was analysized. The phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrate, flavonoids, glycosides, phenols, protein, saponins , terpenoids and tannins. The phytocompounds were separated using thin layer chromatography. The antibacterial activity of separated phytocompunds such as alkaloids, flavonoids , saponins, tannins and terpenoids were tested against human pathogenic bacterial strains such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella oxytoca , Klebsiella pneumonia , Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus. The saponins compounds exhibited promising activity against tested bacterial pathogens.
